Tooth-Colored Fillings – Cambridge, MA

Seamless Cavity Repair

Cavities are the most common dental problem, with more than 90% of Americans developing at least one cavity in their lifetime. In the past, dentists always used a dark-colored, metal-based material called silver amalgam to fill in spots of decay. Today, though, a better option is available. Here at Fresh Pond Dental, we use tooth-colored fillings in Cambridge to treat cavities in a way that is effective, conservative, and aesthetically pleasing.

Why Choose Fresh Pond Dental for Tooth-Colored Fillings?

What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings are often referred to as white fillings or composite resin fillings. The resin that composes them is the same material that we use for cosmetic dental bonding. We shade-match it to the teeth so it blends in seamlessly with the surrounding enamel.

Unlike silver amalgam fillings, tooth-colored fillings do not contain any metal. Rather, they are made of a mixture of plastic, tiny glass particles, and other materials that work well within the human body.

How Do Tooth-Colored Fillings Work?

The process for placing a tooth-colored filling is relatively quick and comfortable. First, we use a shade-guide to choose the right color for your filling. Then, we prepare the tooth by removing decayed tissue from inside the cavity. We often use local anesthesia for this part of the procedure, but it is not always necessary if the cavity is relatively shallow.

Once your tooth is prepared, we insert the resin. A special light hardens the resin in a matter of seconds. Then, we carefully shape the filling so it does not interfere with your bite. Your tooth might be a little extra sensitive for a few days after your appointment. However, you will be free to eat and drink virtually anything immediately after you leave our office.
