Did you know that some form of gum disease afflicts nearly half of the adults in the U.S.? It is especially prevalent among older individuals, but it can affect people of any age. Here at Fresh Pond Dental, we fully understand just how serious gum disease is, and we are here to help you fight it. Read below to learn more about what gum disease is and what we can do to help you conquer it.
Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue. It begins as gingivitis, which is a mild infection that causes inflammation, swelling, redness, bleeding gums, and other unpleasant symptoms. Gingivitis is reversible and does not cause any permanent damage to the oral tissues.
If gingivitis remains untreated for too long, it can progress into periodontitis, the advanced form of gum disease. Periodontitis is characterized by permanent damage to the bone beneath the gums. It often results in gum recession, tooth loss, and other serious problems.
There are various types of gum disease treatment in Cambridge. In very mild cases, you might be able to reverse the problem with changes to your oral hygiene routine. We can coach you on proper brushing and flossing techniques, and perhaps recommend that you use specific products, to help you combat harmful bacterial buildup.
If the gum disease is a little more advanced, you might require scaling and root planing. Basically, this is a deep cleaning of the mouth. We scale the teeth by removing bacteria-filled plaque from both above and below the gumline. Then, we smooth out the roots of the teeth so it is more difficult for bacteria to collect on them. Following scaling and root planing, your gums should naturally reattach to your teeth and regain their health.
Severe cases of gum disease might require surgical intervention to remove damaged tissue.
Treatment for gum disease can serve as a preventive measure against tooth loss. It also can reduce or eliminate gum pain and improve the way your smile looks. However, those benefits are just the beginning. Additional advantages of gum disease treatment include:
